Biography

Myles Smith is a Consultant General Surgeon and Surgical Oncologist. After completing his surgical training through the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland's Higher Surgical Training scheme, he pursued a General Surgical Oncology Fellowship at the University of Toronto. He joined The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust in 2015, where he focuses on sarcoma and melanoma treatment.

His postgraduate research at University College Cork, under the mentorship of Professors TG Cotter and HP Redmond, explored tumour heterogeneity and local recurrence mechanisms after cancer surgery. Since joining The Institute of Cancer Research and RMH, he has combined clinical practice with research in biomarkers, advanced imaging, and minimally invasive techniques, aiming to improve outcomes for cancer patients through collaboration and innovation.

Research Themes and Focus Since Joining ICR and RMH

Since joining The Institute of Cancer Research and The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, my research has centered on integrating cutting-edge technologies and methodologies to improve outcomes in cancer treatment. My work spans molecular biomarker discovery, advanced imaging techniques, and innovative surgical approaches tailored to sarcoma and melanoma patients. Collaborative efforts have been a cornerstone of this journey, enabling the translation of scientific discoveries into clinical applications that advance patient care. Mr. Smith's research subsequently has focused on molecular biomarkers in solid tumours, including incorporating new imaging techniques into the surgical cancer pathway.

In collaboration with Imperial College and the Convergence Science Centre, we have worked on developing 3D holograms from imaging, co-registration, augmented reality (AR), and computer vision to plan and guide surgery. Additionally, partnerships with market-leading industry players, such as Holocare, have supported these advancements.
