Meet our entrepreneurs-in-residence

Our three entrepreneurs-in-residence are successful entrepreneurs and businesspeople who are giving up a portion of their time to act as advisors, mentors and sources of expertise. They are helping us at The Institute of Cancer Research, London, in realising our translational aims.

 

Hans Hofstraat, Heather King, David Browning, and Simon Devonshire have decades of experience between them in developing and commercialising research ideas through partnerships with companies – and have all signed up to help our scientists to identify and develop ideas with commercial potential.

They are also part of a programme of training and mentoring to provide the benefits of their experience to our research staff and students.

Hans Hofstraat 

Hans is an experienced leader in medtech, diagnostics, and digital health and a former long-term Vice President at Philips Research, where he worked with teams across the globe on innovations in clinical domains including oncology, cardiovascular diseases and neurology. He has been involved in setting up and supporting start-ups including Biocartis and InnoSign and helped to form the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) Health and the Dutch Center for Translational Molecular Medicine.

Heather King

Heather has extensive experience leading boards and senior management teams in therapeutic, medical device and digital health companies. Her work at the ICR will include helping researchers to craft grant applications to increase a project's commercial or translational potential, or exploring options to create spin-out companies or develop commercial services.

David Browning

David is CEO of Fixed Phage and has held innovation leadership roles in companies including Philips and J&J. He is aiming to help researchers translate great science and inspiration into practical applications through mentorship, advice and connections to partners.

 

Simon Devonshire

Simon is Chair of Ploughshare Innovations and entrepreneur-in-residence at the National Physical Laboratory amongst many other interests. He has a particular interest in mass adoption of innovative technologies and will help to maximise the positive impact of the ICR's science by scouting for innovations and opportunities that can positively impact as many people as possible.

Business and Innovation

The entrepreneurs-in-residence will be working closely with the ICR's Business and Innovation Office. They were recruited as part of a programme to increase our entrepreneurial activities that ultimately aim to develop more new products, services and companies to benefit cancer patients.
