The ICR’s Business and Innovation Office regularly hosts and attends external events where our scientists network with colleagues from industry.
Our own Partnering to Defeat Cancer series provides an opportunity for companies to identify collaboration opportunities with researchers at one of the world’s leading academic research institutes in oncology, as well as learn about possible licensing opportunities arising from our research and to meet some of our leading scientists.

A welcome return to in-person business networking
July 2022
The ICR’s Partnering to Defeat Cancer series returned for the first time since the Covid pandemic, hosting an in-person event at law firm Simmons and Simmons in the City of London.
The ICR’s Professor Jon Pines gave an overview of our sector-leading work in cancer biology, while Professor Wojciech Niedzwiedz introduced his work in understanding methods of DNA replication and repair in cancer.
Carsten Schweer, from Merck, then spoke about the ICR’s long-term collaboration with the company including our strategic alliance in cancer drug discovery.
Finally, Business Development Manager Andy Carr told the audience about opportunities to collaborate with the ICR in a range of research areas – from cancer therapeutics to radiotherapy and imaging.
Perspectives from the pharma industry
June 2022
The ICR hosted the Pharmaceutical Licensing Group’s summer meeting with a series of talks from figures from the pharma and biotech sectors and our own Business and Innovation Office, followed by a drinks reception.
Speakers included Jon Wilkinson, Deputy Director and Head of Business Development and Licensing at the ICR, who gave an overview of academic research translation.
MedCity event showcases ICR’s Innovation Gateway
June 2022
Members of MedCity’s network of life-sciences companies heard about the latest new developments and opportunities at The London Cancer Hub during an online event.
It served as a showcase for the Innovation Gateway, and Dr Ivana Poparic, Head of Life Sciences Cluster Development at MedCity opened by highlighting the “huge need” for new R&D space in London.
Innovation Gateway tenants Vesynta and The Exercise Clinic, and researchers from the ICR and our partner hospital The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust gave a series of presentations.
Policy leaders gather at ICR summer summit on drug pricing and access
August 2019
More than 50 leading figures from Government, industry, regulatory bodies, charities and academia attended a recent ICR summer summit on cancer drug pricing and access, at the Royal Society of Chemistry in Piccadilly.
Through a fast-paced series of presentations, workshops and breakout sessions, delegates sought to generate ideas and seek consensus on how to solve the current crisis in drug pricing and access for patients – all under the guidance of staff from the ICR's Business and Innovation Office and Communications directorate.
Presenters included Paul Blakeley of the UK Government's Office for Life Sciences and Jon Sussex, Chief Economist at the influential think tank RAND Europe, alongside our Chief Executive, Professor Paul Workman and our Head of Policy and Engagement, Dr Eva Sharpe.
Scientists talk medicine and engineering with potential partners at the Harwell campus
July 2019
Researchers from Harwell – home to more than 225 organisations and well-known as a base for the UK Space Agency – and other companies spoke to ICR scientists and staff from our Enterprise Unit after a series of presentations about the ICR’s research and our work with commercial partners.
At the famous Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Harwell, delegates heard about a range of our cutting-edge research, our culture of collaboration with industry, recent examples of our success and upcoming opportunities for possible partnership.
Babraham Research Campus hosts ICR networking event for our scientists and potential new commercial partners

The ICR played host to scientists and possible future partners from the commercial sector to discuss opportunities to work together to defeat cancer, at the Babraham Research Campus in Cambridge.
The busy networking event saw accelerator groups, SME businesses and larger organisations from the pharmaceutical and biotech industry meet with leading ICR scientists to hear about our cutting edge research and explore opportunities to collaborate on our latest innovations.
