Professor Helen McNair’s group investigates aspects of technology and patient care in radiotherapy.

Our research is centred on assessing techniques to improve the accuracy and precision of radiotherapy delivery.

1. Improve patient experience

Investigating patient positioning and reproducibility. For example, use of fluorescent tattoos instead of black ink tattoos for patient positioning and the use of more patient acceptable devices to stabilise the brain.

2. Optimise the patient pathway by utilising staff efficiently

Investigating where radiographers can make the patient treatment pathway faster and more efficient by making evaluations and decisions instead of doctors.

3. Implementing novel imaging techniques

Investigate ways of localising and verifying of the tumour position.

The group investigates aspects of technology and patient care. Professor McNair's research has been centred on assessing techniques to improve accuracy and precision of radiotherapy delivery and is currently investigating the optimal delivery of real time adaptive radiotherapy.

This includes measuring efficacy and efficiency, as well as patient and radiographer acceptability, which will enable the reduction of normal tissue toxicity, escalation of dose, and thereby the improvement of patient outcomes.

Helen is the lead research radiographer in radiotherapy at The Royal Marsden, NHS Foundation Trust and Reader in Translational Therapeutic Radiography at the ICR. Her research centres on assessing techniques that improve accuracy and precision of radiotherapy delivery.
