The Institute of Cancer Research, London, is honoured to be a beneficiary of a motorbike ride in tribute to Dave Myers of the Hairy Bikers. The ride will take place on Saturday 8 June 2024.

The ‘Dave Day’ ride out will bring together bikers from across the country, and friends and fans of Dave in a heartfelt tribute. Thousands of bikers are expected to travel from London to Barrow-in-Furness – Dave’s hometown.

The ride is being organised by volunteers and will be led by Dave’s fellow Hairy Biker Si King, and Dave’s friend Jason ‘Woody’ Woodcock.

Remembering Dave and raising money for two charities

Dave Myers sadly died from cancer in February this year, aged 66. Dave’s widow, Liliana, chose The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR), which is both a research institute and a charity, as one of the recipients of fundraising from the ride out. Alongside supporting the ICR’s world-leading cancer research, the ride out will also benefit Childline.

Riders will set off from the Ace Café in London, NW10 7UD, at 8am. Ending in Barrow-in-Furness, Dave Day will culminate in an explosion of culture with events, bands, plays, food stalls, and a concert.

Last month, Bikers Escorts East Yorkshire independently organised a memorial fundraising ride in tribute to Dave from Beverley in East Yorkshire up the coast to Whitby and Scarborough, following a route taken by the Hairy Bikers on one of their programmes. Up to 6,000 bikers were thought to have taken part in that ride and even more are expected to attend the Dave Day ride.

Supporting the ICR to make a real difference in Dave's memory

Liliana Myers, Dave’s wife, said:

“My husband, Dave, was larger than life – he was warm and generous with his time, with his hugs, with laughter, and with joy. An exceptional husband, wonderful stepdad, inspirational character on screen and in real life, loyal friend and in his own words, ‘A Creator, Never a Follower’.

“After much consideration, I’ve chosen The Institute of Cancer Research as the charity to support in his memory. I want the money raised in his name to make a real difference for somebody who goes through what my husband did, and I know that by supporting this charity and research institute we will be funding the next discoveries in cancer treatment.”

Jenny Seymour, Joint Head of Fundraising Campaigns and Individual Giving at The Institute of Cancer Research, London, which is one of the beneficiaries of the Dave Day Ride Out, said:

“We’re immensely grateful to Dave’s wife, Liliana, and to all the bikers who will ride in June, for supporting our cancer research. We couldn’t keep making life-changing discoveries without the support of our donors and fundraisers. Every donation generously made in Dave’s memory will help fund research to improve the lives of people with cancer.”
