Breathlessness CD Rom Wins International Award

Wednesday 25 September 2002

The Interactive Education Unit (IEU) has won an award for its CD Rom on managing breathlessness. 'A Breath of Fresh Air' was awarded the prize in Intercom, the International Communications Film and Video competition.

The IEU was established in September 2000 in response to changing trends in education. The Unit develops educational materials about cancer in an interactive format, and also uses media such as print, video and audio to support interactive resources. Target audiences are healthcare professionals, scientists, students and ultimately patients and the general public.

'A Breath of Fresh Air', was one of the unit’s first projects and has been highly successful with more than 9,000 copies distributed worldwide to date. While it focuses on the management of breathlessness in people with lung cancer, it has also proved valuable in managing breathlessness due to other causes. The program was developed in collaboration with The Centre for Cancer and Palliative Care Studies at The Institute and sponsored by the Diana, Princess of Wales, Memorial Fund Project at The Royal Marsden NHS Trust and Macmillan Cancer Relief. Leading retailer, Marks and Spencer is now funding the distribution of the programme for the next two years.

The CD Rom has six interlinked sections, ranging from how and why breathlessness takes place, through conventional management, the intervention, case studies and resources, such as relaxation scripts and booklets, to use with patients.

Kate Allen, Director of IEU said, "We are delighted to win this award. What is particularly pleasing is that the programme has been judged to be educationally excellent in international open competition where applicants ranged from modest outfits like the IEU to somewhat larger ones such as NASA!".

The IEU aims to promote and disseminate the educational, research and clinical activities of The Institute in order to improve the treatment, care and quality of life of people with cancer. For more information please see the IEU website: www.ieu.icr.ac.uk
