ICR launches new PhD recruitment drive

A group of students

The Institute of Cancer Research, London, has begun its annual drive to recruit the best and brightest PhD students, as advertisements for 12 fully funded research projects go live.

The new PhD projects will commence in 2017 and cover a wide range of research topics, including fundamental cancer biology, breast cancer research and medical physics.

The recruitment process is open to graduates or final year undergraduates who hold or expect to gain a first or upper second class honours degree, or equivalent, or a Masters degree, in a relevant subject

ICR staff and students are encouraged to spread the word to highly promising potential students.

Fully funded studentships

The ICR is one of the most influential cancer research institutes in the world and is committed to attracting and developing the brightest minds.

The ICR’s PhD programme provides students with training and guidance from world-leading scientists and clinicians as they make their own discoveries to help defeat cancer.

Successful candidates undertake a four-year research training programme at the ICR and, this year, 12 projects in six research divisions have been confirmed.

Three projects will be available in the Division of Cancer Therapeutics, two projects each in Cancer Biology, Structural Biology, Molecular Pathology, and Radiotherapy and Imaging, and one project in Breast Cancer Research.

During the four-year research training programme, students receive an annual stipend of £21,000 as well as having fees and project costs paid.

The ICR PhD studentships are funded from a range of sources, including the Cancer Research UK Centre at the ICR and The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, ICR core funding and other cancer charities.

Clare Gardner, Deputy Head of Registry at the ICR, said: “The ICR frequently gets around 150 applications for every PhD project we advertise so competition is intense. Applicants travel from all over the world and must demonstrate a high calibre of talent and ability to be chosen for interview, but the opportunities here are really worth it.

"The ICR’s mixture of academic and clinical expertise sets us apart from other institutions, and gives our students a unique experience. ICR students take part in cutting-edge research at the very forefront of their fields, and the work they do here could literally change lives.”

Successful applicants will be invited to a two-day recruitment event at the ICR in January 2017.
