The Institute of Cancer Research, London, has welcomed the launch of a £350 million tender to find a commercial development partner for The London Cancer Hub as a major milestone in turning the vision for the project into reality.

The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) is working with the London Borough of Sutton on a major initiative to create the world’s leading life-science campus focused on cancer research, treatment, education and enterprise in Sutton, south London.

The London Borough of Sutton is now seeking a commercial partner to take the lead on masterplanning, raising of development finance, procurement of third-party contractors and marketing to occupiers for the planned £350m development.

The commercial developer will be charged with leading a dramatic redevelopment of the current campus that will double capacity for cancer research and enterprise – hugely accelerating the search for new treatments.

Professor Paul Workman, Chief Executive of The Institute of Cancer Research, London, said:

“It’s exciting to have reached such an important milestone in the development of The London Cancer Hub. This is a unique opportunity for a developer to help create a vibrant, collaborative campus that enables academia, industry and the NHS to work together to crack the problem of cancer.

“We expect the creation of The London Cancer Hub to greatly accelerate the ICR’s discovery of new cancer treatments, and to increase the chances that these will reach the clinic – with huge benefits for both patients and the UK economy.”

The London Cancer Hub is one of the UK’s most significant regeneration projects, aiming to create a vibrant community of scientists, doctors and innovative companies, supported by a range of state-of-the-art facilities.

It is being led by London Borough of Sutton and The Institute of Cancer Research, London, with the support of The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and The Mayor of London.
