The Institute of Cancer Research Receives Top Marks

Monday 26 July 2004

The Institute of Cancer Research has today (Friday 23 July) received the highest level of recommendation from its first audit by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education.

The Institute is unique in the higher education community - its academic provision is exclusively centred upon its research degree programmes and its strategies for programme delivery reflect this. The Institute is therefore delighted that its management of academic quality and standards have received broad confidence in all categories and in particular that it has been commended for a number of areas of good practice:

  • The commendable care taken in the project planning and student admissions processes in matching the student to the project and supervisor
  • The combination of the supervisory team, the student portfolio and the MPhil to PhD transfer viva, as formative instruments in ensuring successful student progression through their chosen programme of study
  • The breadth, depth and accessibility of material provided by the web-based Interactive Education Unit to meet the needs of students with respect to their personal development and wider understanding of cancer and cancer therapies

Professor Peter Rigby, Chief Executive of The Institute of Cancer Research said, “We are proud of the standard of work our students achieve and we are delighted that the QAA has recognised that we have excellent student supervision at The Institute. I am sure that many of our students will continue to go on to be top researchers in the field of cancer research.”

The Institute has over 100 research students currently studying with some of the top cancer specialists in the world on all areas of cancer research. At the core of The Institute’s strategy is the primary vision of educating and training the next generation of cancer researchers to continue the global progress towards eliminating the human consequences of this disease.
