The Institute of Cancer Research Announces Fellowships for 2004

Thursday 29 January 2004

Fellowships of The Institute of Cancer Research were conferred on the distinguished cancer research scientists, Professor Peter Brookes, Professor Phil Lawley and Professor Daniel Catovsky, at The Institute’s graduation ceremony on 29 January. Lord Faringdon, Chairman of The Institute’s Trustees, presented these awards at the new research facility in Sutton, Surrey, which is named in honour of Professors Brookes and Lawley.

Fellowships are conferred upon those exceptional individuals who have made outstanding contributions to cancer research, treatment or education.

Institute of Cancer Research scientists, Professors Brookes and Lawley, changed the course of cancer research when in 1964 they made the ground breaking discovery that DNA malfunction is the basic cause of cancer. Professor Daniel Catovsky is recognised as a world leader in the classification and management of leukaemia. In addition to leading the Academic Haematology Department at The Institute, he has been President of the British Society of Haematology and President of the Medical Research Council Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia Trials.
