Nine scientists from The Institute of Cancer Research and The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust have been appointed to be Senior Investigators at the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).

The NIHR College of Senior Investigators has been set up to support the people who are making the most contributions to health research within the NHS. Members offer their expertise in a variety of different ways – sitting on panels, sharing their research findings and by being part of the peer review process. Collectively these activities help to shape evidence-based decision making.

Peter Rigby, Chief Executive at The Institute of Cancer Research said: "We're very pleased that research into the causes of cancer and its treatment are going to be so well represented in the NIHR. It is vital that decisions about patient care are based on solid evidence. These appointments of some of the very best researchers in their field will help to develop new and exciting therapies in the future."

The Senior Investigators take up their posts in April 2008.
