Entente Cordiale Recognises Scientific Excellence

Thursday 18 November 2004

The Institute of Cancer Research is delighted that Mrs Cherie Blair and Madame Bernadette Chirac have honoured two of its former researchers at a ceremony at Downing Street today. The joint award, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Entente Cordiale between the UK and France, recognises the outstanding contribution that the two young scientists have made to cancer research.

The UK and French Governments were keen to mark the Entente Cordiale centenary with initiatives looking to the future and focusing on science and young people. Closer collaboration in cancer research was chosen since the fight against cancer is a priority for both countries.

British winner, Professor Chris Boshoff, was a Clinical Fellow who also gained his PhD at The Institute between 1995 and 1998. French scientist, Dr Emmanuel Vial was based at The Institute between 2000 and 2003, where his research focused on cell movement and the spread of cancer. Both were funded by Cancer Research UK.

The prize of £12,500 each rewards the contribution that the scientists have made to cancer research and provides them with the means to establish research collaborations with the other country.

Professor Peter Rigby, Chief Executive of The Institute of Cancer Research comments:

“We’re delighted to congratulate Chris and Emmanuel on this outstanding achievement and are proud that The Institute continues to educate, train and support future generations of the world’s leading cancer researchers.”
