City Event Reinforces Serious Message of everyman male cancer awareness month

Monday 8 June 1998

A penalty shoot-out against the most capped player in English footballing history, and an auction of boxer shorts designed by celebrities such as Paul Gascoigne, Joanna Lumley, Gary Lineker and Liam Neeson, will form the centre-piece of a major charity fundraising event at the Broadgate Arena in the City of London on Friday 19 June.

Staged to reinforce the messages of the Institute of Cancer Research's everyman male cancer awareness month, the aim of the everyman campaign is to raise £3 million to establish the UK's first dedicated male cancer research centre. Both testicular and prostate cancer are on the increase and the latter is predicted to overtake lung and breast to become the most common cancer in the UK within the next 20 years.

In the midst of World Cup fever, Peter Shilton - one of the greatest England goalkeepers ever - will face teams from some of the City's leading financial and business institutions, while television presenter Ross King will preside over the auction of boxer shorts whose creators also include Joanna Lumley, David Gower and the designer Katharine Hamnett. Former This Life actress Natasha Little, who plays the lead role in the BBC's forthcoming adaptation of Vanity Fair, will attend a photo-shoot.

Prior to the auction, models from top London agency Select Model Management will mingle with the crowd of City slickers providing a preview of the shorts. All money raised will go towards the everyman appeal.

Peter Shilton, whose illustrious footballing career not only includes 125 England caps but stints with Nottingham Forrest, Wimbledon and West Ham, said: "Until now awareness of the facts surrounding male cancers has been limited. The everyman campaign makes the messages of this important subject more accessible and I am delighted to be able to help increase awareness by participating in this entertaining event."

The everyman/Broadgate Arena event is supported by Robert Half International, the world's leading specialist recruitment consultants.
