Cancer nursing centre secures 5 years funding

8 December 1998

The Institute of Cancer Research in Chelsea has announced that a five-year funding contract for its Centre for Cancer and Palliative Care Studies has been secured with the Inner London Consortium of NHS managers. This means that the Centre is now formally recognised by the NHS Executive as a national training centre.

The Director of the Centre, Jessica Corner, who is the first Professor of Cancer Nursing at the Institute of Cancer Research, hosted an official contract-signing, to mark the completion of negotiations, on Tuesday 8 December.

The Centre for Cancer and Palliative Care Studies at the Institute of Cancer Research is the biggest teaching centre for cancer nurses in the UK, training nearly 500 specialists a year. The new contract recognises the Centre as a national training centre for nurses and other health professionals in cancer and palliative care and protects the Centre's income, for the next five years.

Professor Corner comments, "Due to successful research, people are living with cancer for longer than ever before. The role of nurses has become increasingly vital as they provide much of the on-going support essential to cancer sufferers in their daily lives. The recognition of the Centre's important role in cancer and palliative training is excellent news, and a real achievement for the Centre."
