A Close Shave for Everyman

Wednesday 30 April 2003

For the sixth Everyman Male Cancer Awareness Month, The Institute of Cancer Research has teamed up with King of Shaves to get the cancer awareness message across to young men.

The highlight of the partnership will be The Big Shave held on 6 June at The Broadgate Centre in The City of London, where celebrities, businessmen and members of the public will be persuaded to submit to the ShaveSquad to raise money for vital research into male cancers.

Testicular cancer is the most common form of cancer in young men, mostly affecting those between the ages of 20 and 35, about 1 man in 500 will develop this problem, while prostate cancer affects about 21,700 men each year in the UK.

Will King, founder and CEO of King of Shaves comments:
“ Young men are notorious for not looking after themselves. We feel passionate about working with Everyman to educate men that taking care of themselves could one day save their lives.”

People around the country will be able to participate in The Big Shave by holding their own sponsored shaves. From May, the first 1000 people to register online to hold an event will be sent a free shave kit (www.icr.ac.uk/everyman). Also the ShaveSquad will be touring the country, targeting half a million young men at (1) major sports shows to offer men a shave and some basic information about male cancer awareness.

Philip Black, Director of Fundraising at Everyman, comments:
“ We are delighted to have King of Shaves on board for this, our sixth annual Everyman Male Cancer Awareness Month, and look forward to the ShaveSquad taking to the road to spread the male cancer awareness message and raise funds for vital research into testicular and prostate cancers.”
