Tuition fees

Tuition fees are set annually and cover many aspects of your study such as registration, tuition, supervision and examination.

The information provided below applies to self-funding students only. If you applied for (and are awarded) a research studentship administered through The Institute of Cancer Research, the studentship will cover all fees, experimental running costs and will also provide a tax-free stipend for living expenses.

This applies equally to students from the UK, the EU or overseas, but note MRC eligibility restrictions.

For research degrees, a bench fee to cover the cost of experiments may also be charged.

Fees are subject to change and are reviewed annually by the ICR Fees Working Group. Students will be informed of the fees levels as soon as they have been approved by the ICR Executive Strategy Board.

Classification

We charge a different rate of fees according to the fees classification which is determined in accordance with the Education Fees and Award Regulation (2007).

If you are unsure of which classification you fall into, please refer to the UKCISA website for more detailed information. Please note that your fee classification plays no part in the result of your application.

Payment

You will receive an invoice from the ICR finance department which will state the fees payable. Tuition fees are payable by the dates specified, unless special arrangements have been previously agreed in writing with the registry. The payment of fees is the responsibility of the student.

Students are normally expected to pay the full fee at the start of the academic year. In exceptional circumstances, the ICR may agree to a student paying by instalments (50% at the start of the year and the remaining 50% at six months).

However, a 10% charge will be added to the total fee. This is at the discretion of the Deputy Director of Academic Services.

Any student who has not made satisfactory arrangements to settle all outstanding debts or other financial obligations to the ICR may be liable to have his/her registration terminated after written notice and, in any event, will not be:

  • permitted to re-enrol
  • informed of the results of any examinations taken
  • awarded any degree or other qualification

Refund

Any student who withdraws from a course during the academic year will not be automatically entitled to a refund of fees.

Please direct any enquires to the Registry.
